Moscow. Jul 13, 2010. /Lesprom Network/. Finnish forest industry purchased 4 million cubic metres of timber from private forests in June. The aggregate purchase volume for January-June, almost 11 million cubic metres, is more than triple the amount achieved in the corresponding period of 2009, the Finnish Forest Industries Federation said in a statement received by Lesprom Network. However, the sluggish pace of timber sales in the early part of the year still affects the January-June aggregate purchase volume, which is 14% lower than the long-term average.
Aggregate purchases of pulpwood came to 6 million cubic metres and log purchases to 4.5 million cubic metres in January-June.
The stumpage prices of almost all timber grades increased by 5% from May. The average stumpage price of pine logs was Euro 56 per cubic metre, while spruce logs cost Euro 57 per cubic metre. Birch logs fetched Euro 41 per cubic metre on average.
The average price of pine pulpwood was Euro 16 per cubic metre and birch pulpwood cost Euro 15 per cubic metre. The average price of spruce pulpwood increased by 4% to Euro 19 per cubic metre. Current prices are higher than the average level of the 2000s.
As an ecological material that is well suited for building, wood can offer great potential for the construction sector if its supply becomes as reliable as that of other materials.
The steady flow of competitively priced wood from forests to production facilities is a fundamental prerequisite for growth in wood construction as well as for generating value-added through forestry and the forest industry.
Growing production and livelier exports of forest industry products in the early part of the year have led to increased demand for domestic timber. All timber grades and forest energy are now in good demand. The time is very opportune for forest owners to visit their stands and plan future timber sales, the Finnish Forest Industries Federation said.
