Metsäliitto reported FY 2009 operating loss of Euro 75 million

Moscow. Feb 08, 2010. /Lesprom Network/. Metsäliitto group reported an operating loss of Euro 75 million for 2009, compared to an operating profit of Euro 45 million the previous year. During the 4Q 2009, however, Metsäliitto shows an operating profit of Euro 44 million, as Nordic Paper Journal reported.

Metsäliitto's sales for 2009 totalled Euro 4,837 million (6,434), and the operating result, excluding non-recurring items, was Euro -75 million (45). Metsäliitto's operating result, including non-recurring items, was Euro 169 million (2).

The most significant cost items were the impairment charge of Euro 113 million, booked by M-real, and the write-downs and cost provisions of Euro 73 million associated with the action plans, which were announced in December.

The 4Q operating result, excluding non-recurring items, was Euro 44 million (4Q 2008: Euro -75 million). Compared to the 3Q 2009, the operating result improved by Euro 35 million. The result was improved by, among other things, more favourable development of pulp prices than expected, improved utilization rates at the mills, and internal profit improvement measures. The result of the tissue paper business in Metsä Tissue was good throughout the year.
